Our Story

In 2014 Ben and I (Tom) set out at the grand old age of 23 to start Hitchin's first proper brunch cafe. As you can imagine the first few years were chock full of failures (don't look at our historic Google reviews) but the townspeople of Hitchin saw in The Groundworks what it could be: the brunch cafe of dreams that it is today.

We want you to come in and have the best brunch you've ever had. That's the mission. Our coffee is sourced from Allpress Espresso. Based in Dalston they are committed to paying fair prices to producers, ensuring their livelihoods remain secure while maintaining the high-quality coffee offering you, the customer, deserves.

When it comes to our food, our menus change seasonally  and feature ingredients inspired by food from all over the world. Right now we're a bit obsessed with chilli crisp and labneh, both of which we make in house.
